Your phone’s pre-trip eSIM checklist
Check the exact device variant, carrier lock and setup instructions before choosing a travel eSIM.
Check the exact model and regional variant
A familiar model name alone is not enough to establish compatibility. Regional variants can differ. Find your device’s exact model identifier in its settings and compare it with the compatibility information for that variant.
Use the compatibility checker as a starting point. When a model or variant is unknown, confirm eSIM support with the manufacturer before purchasing. A physical SIM slot does not by itself tell you whether eSIM is supported.
Confirm the phone is unlocked
An eSIM-capable phone can still be restricted to its original carrier. If the lock status is unclear, ask that carrier whether the device can use a travel eSIM from another service.
Check this before departure, allowing time for the carrier’s process. Compatibility and carrier unlock are separate checks; passing one does not establish the other.
Prepare for installation
Read the installation and activation instructions for the exact plan before adding the eSIM. Installation and the start of validity are not always the same event. Use a reliable internet connection for setup, and keep access to the instructions while you complete it.
- Check when the plan’s validity begins and any installation deadline.
- Make sure you can view the installation instructions while using your phone.
- Keep activation details private; do not post them in a screenshot or public chat.
Choose the right line when you arrive
Follow the plan’s directions for choosing the mobile data line and any roaming setting it requires. Review your home carrier’s roaming settings separately so you understand which line is being used.
If the connection does not work, use the troubleshooting guide before deleting the eSIM. Reinstallation may be restricted for the particular profile. Keep the profile in place while asking support for help.
